Fuck off!
Andy McCluskeyOrchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
That was Andy’s reaction to the comment “Anyone could make that music with that equipment”.
To state the obvious: you need some sort of instrument to create music, but that instrument does not make the music for you.
Composing is a different skill than playing an instrument. Production of music is yet another skill, as is mixing and mastering. And singing. And writing lyrics.
Regardless of which and how much of those skills I possess, I found myself making music using synthesisers. Machines have come and gone, some have been great instruments but not right for me, and some I’ve kept on using since I got them. Below I will list all relevant synths and other instruments and devices I have used over the years.
The Hardware
Behringer Euro Modules
Behringer came out with a number of cheap modules, so here we go. "Roland" and "ARP 2500" in nice TipTop enclosures. The semi-portability makes this perfect for, say, patching in bed.
Prophet-5 [2021 – ]
Oh no I didn't...? Yep, I did...
Rev 4, to be exact.
There it is, with its pal. I didn't actually get two; the first one had a broken USB chip, or something, so I returned it and got another one, but not in that order.
Here it…
Vox Valvetronix AD15VT
This literally showed up at my doorstep. Thanx, you-know-who-you-are! Now I understand why my guitars have been so quiet. This is also a nice way to meet new neighbours.
Ibanez GSRM20B-WK [2021 – ]
I've been meaning to get a bass guitar for ages, just to get that wonderful *twannnnnng* sound. Let's see where this ends up.
And what is it with these guitar / bass naming conventions? I get it that if you have loads of similar products…
Moog Mother-32 [2021 – ]
A solid semimodular monosynth + sequencer. Part of my 3-piece random sound & song generator thingy consisting of this one, the DFAM and the Subharmonicon, which I plan to use as more or less one instrument. Let's see how that goes.
Moog DFAM [2021 – ]
This is really far from a normal drum machine, as I've become to know them. Drum synth with sequencer is closer to the truth. Got to give it to the Moog guys, it's fun to come across something that really surprises you and leaves you wondering…
Moog Subharmonicon [2021 – ]
This is something that is so different from anything else ever. It will most definitely require a lot of experimentation and me wrapping my head around subharmonics instead of just the usual stuff that's present in every other synth ever made…
Behringer Model D [2021 – ]
Behringer's version of the classic-est of all classics, the Moog Minimoog Model D. With these prices, I just could not resist getting one. Seems solid so far.
Behringer MonoPoly [2021 – ]
Behringer's version of the classic Korg synth. The original was the only one of the Older Monos that has been on my to-get list since I got into analog synths. At the time, 2004-ish, you could get a decent "antique" mono from 500€ upwards,…
Behringer 2600 [2020 – ]
Another case of Behringer cloning a piece of synth history, the ARP 2600. The original was on my wish list, the one you know will never happen. So Behringer really did a lot people happy by bringing this one to market. It's a r-e-a-l-l-y nice…
CME XKey Air 25 [2020 – ]
Got this as my on-the-road keyboard. Just a bit wider than my laptop, so it fits nicely in my bag. It will undoubtedly see more use during summers. Took it out for a spin a couple of times last summer, works like a charm.
BEHRINGER PRO-ONE [2020 – ]
Another Behringer clone-of-a-classic, this time the Sequential Circuits Pro One. I also have the original, and they do sound quite the same. So, again, for this price, no reason not to get it if you need live analog voices. Oh, patch point…
BEHRINGER CAT [2021 – ]
More Behringer clones. A noise machine definitely, in ARP Odyssey territory. Really fun and quirky sound, lots of modulation possibilities (plus the patch points), so definitely a fun thing to sit down with.
BEHRINGER WASP DELUXE [2020 – ]
Behringer clones again. They've really chosen quite a nice set of synths to copy. This is quite a straightforward and basic synth, but the repeating envelopes make it special. The sound itself is great, as really is the case with practically…
KORG ARP ODYSSEY MODULE [2020 -]
Lovely! A modern (= better working) version of the wonderful classic ARP Odyssey. My original one is becoming a bit tired, so this one is a really welcome addition to the Heap. Compared to the original that I have, this one has clearly snappier…
BEHRINGER CRAVE [2020]
Saw it in the store, bought it. Took it home, tried it. Gave it to my brother. Not really anything wrong with it, but there's something about this form factor that just does not work for me. Somebody said it is a blatant copy of Mother-32.…
MOOG GRANDMOTHER [2020 -]
This could be one of the best synths ever made. Proof that less is more. It's really simple and wonderfully inspiring, has patch points and sounds HUGE. You can't go wrong with this one. And the arpeggiator / sequencer by no means lessen the…
GENELEC 6010A [2019 – ]
Actually got these in 2008 or so, but I had them in the kitchen. Moved them to the bedroom part of the studio in 2019, so they didn’t really qualify as studio gear before that.
NATIVE INSTRUMENTS MASCHINE III [2019 – ]
I traded my almost unused Wavedrum for this. I will most likely trade this one unused for something else. Can’t really see myself using it. I thought it would be a standalone beat thingy, but, alas, no. Things need to get simpler, not harder.…
ARTURIA BeatStep [2018 – ]
A really simple sequencer. Traded something for this and haven't really used it. I could drive a part of the modular with it, so I'm not giving up on it yet.
ARTURIA KEYLAB 49 [2018 – ]
I bought this to get a more standard touch into my keyboard, instead of the short-travel feel of the CME. It was also another attempt to really get used to MIDI controllers with sliders, buttons and pads, but no. This being an Arturia device…
CEM XKEY 37 [2015 – ]
Got this because it’s the most minimal and sleek keyboard around. The idea was that I only need an easy way to punch in notes. In that sense this is the perfect tool. Suits my playing skills perfectly. And if I need more control, I would…
GENELEC F TWO [2015 – ]
My subwoofer of choice to complement my monitors. I’m not entirely sure how neighbour-friendly this is in a block of flats. To be on the safe side, I made a timer trigged script on my Mac to change the bass EQ settings at night. And again…
GENELEC G FOUR [2015 – ]
Got these babies with some Frank money. These appear to be not for everyone, but they sound pretty solid to me.
MOOG SUB 37 [2015 – ]
This is one of those synths that I’ve bought and then criminally underused. It’s a quality piece of gear with a great sound, but I just haven't gotten around to use it that much. It is also currently my most complex analog synth, so that…
KORG VOLCA SAMPLE [2014 – 2015]
I honestly don’t know why I bought this. I have a soft spot for drum machines, but I still never use them the way they should be used. Besides, I think an iPad could be the perfect drum machine that would replace small boxes like this as…
WALDORF BLOFELD [2013 – 2015]
Got it for some nice presets I heard on the net. Then I looked at it for a couple of years and sold it after Judgment Day. Nothing wrong with it really, it just wasn’t for me.
MOTU MIDI EXPRESS 128 [2013 – ]
A standard MIDI interface. Works with USB power. Had to get two of them when my MIDISport 8×8 died.
ARTURIA MINIBRUTE [2013 – ]
This is quite a nice one. One oscillator, more or less, and quite a nasty sound. I’m actually tempted to upgrade it to its big brother with patch points.
CLAVIA NORD DRUM [2012 – 2015]
I have a soft spot for drum machines. I have a soft spot for Clavia. My entire studio could be red. Nice enough, but had that thin plastic Clavia sound, so it became the victim of Judgment Day, as did many other items. Haven’t missed it.…
DSI MONOEVOLVER KEYS [2012 – 2015]
I was lusting for a PolyEvolver Keys for years, but it always felt like a bit of overkill. I think that I had come to realize just how much of a monosynth guy I really am. So when Dave Smith announced that he would be discontinuing the MEK,…
ANALOGUE SOLUTIONS OBERKORN MK III [2011 – 2015]
A really solid analog sequencer! 3 x 16 steps you can trigger in various ways. If you’re looking for an analog sequencer, you can’t really go wrong with this one. i sold it as part of Frank after Judgment Day, and I’m thinking maybe I…
KORG MONOTRIBE [2011 – 2015]
Another one of those ”small boxes” Korg put out during this time. I got a MIDI kit for this as well, and had it well-integrated into my setup, but didn’t really used it for anything else than mucking around. Again, nothing wrong with…
HARLEY BENTON HBV 840BK 4/4 [2011 – ]
Got this because I wanted to make a cover of Ultravox' Mr X, so a violin was needed. Not an easy instrument; I ended up playing the violin parts one to three notes at a time, and then doing some cutting and pasting and creative editing. End…
OBERHEIM SEM PATCH PANEL [2011 – ]
This one is easy to waste hours at a time with. A really hands-on synth, and patchpoints always makes things more fun. Plays nicely with the modular. I always thought combined D/R-stages in the envelopes are a bit weird. True for this…
CLAVIA NORD MODULAR G2 [2010 – ]
Wow. I can't say Wow enough. The original NM's younger as well as bigger brother, having everything the original one lacked (MIDI modules, decent keyboard). This simply is an incredible piece of machinery. Functionally it builds on the original,…
IBANEZ PF60SCE-NT-20-02 [2010 – ]
A decent steel string electro-acoustic guitar. Just don't ever ask me what guitar I have, as there's no way I can remember.
MOOG VX-351 [2010 – 2015]
An expander module for the Voyager, making it more modular that without it. I put this up for sale after Judgment Day and ended up selling it. The Voyager was also up for grabs, but nobody bought it. Had I known that, I would have kept this…
KORG WAVEDRUM [2010 – 2019]
A machine drum, I guess you could call it. A responsive drum skin, and the plastic body also acts as user interface. The drum brain inside it generates the sounds depending on how you interact with its surface, and it's actually quite impressive.…
JOMOX XBASE 888 [2009 – 2015]
I may have mentioned that I love drum machines. I got this to lay down some serious beats. But I just don't work that way. This ended up becoming just a sound module, so in the end I sold it as it really didn't give me anything unique. Solid…
NOVATION REMOTE SL 25 [2008 – 2013]
While in the basement with all my keyboards tucked away too far from the DAW, I needed something to control them with. I was also interested in trying out how a generic MIDI controller would work for me, both for controlling external synths…
LINE 6 VARIAX 500 [2008 – ]
This thing is something quite extraordinary. Looks like an electric guitar, but contains a bunch of modeled guitars that you can select with a switch. When you play the string, the quitar samples the sound in real time and runs it through the…
BEHRINGER ADA-8000 [2008 – ]
This one provides more physical input/output ports to the RME over an optical connection. I have three of these, but one is slightly defective: there’s a persistent clicking sound which is quite annoying, meaning i can’t use it for recording.…
RME FIREFACE-800 [2008 – ]
I set out to get a decent audio interface, and this is it. Plenty of ins and outs, and solid as a rock.
The way this works, as opposed to an analog mixer, is this: when the analog mixer sums all, say, 12 inputs to a stereo pair (=…
ROLAND SPD-S [2006 – 2013]
Yeah! Drumming again! This is just what the Octapad should have been. The mechanical noise is about the same as the DTXPress pads, so this is quite drummable even late in the evening, and it’s really compact. 9 pads, plus two trigger inputs.…
SHURE SM-58 [2006 – ]
I need a mic. I’m not picky. My brother said this was good, and I keep seeing it everywhere. And it’s been great. It still is.
I would not want to be this microphone. The stuff it has been forced to listen to…
WIARD MODULAR SYNTHESIZER [2006 – 2015]
The more, the merrier. The Wiard modules seem to be quite expensive, but I got two FracRack-format cheapies, which turned out to have an enormous impact on the realtime tweakability of the modular’s parameters: a nice little joystick and…
SYNTHESIZERS.COM MODULAR SYNTHESIZER [2005 – 2015]
My main Modular of choice. I sold my Doepfer (and a spitload of other gear) to finance this, and I am not one bit sorry that I did. The feel is very reliable, the sound is massive, and it simply looks like a modular should look. A shame I could…
DOEPFER A-100 MODULAR SYNTHESIZER [2006 – ]
Butt-ugly or not, the amount of available interesting modules is quite overwhelming, so I really saw no reason not to include Doepfer in my rig. As with Blacet, the idea is to complement the main modular. The first modules I got were two theremin…
BLACET MODULAR SYNTHESIZER [2006 – 2015]
The first “next” manufacturer to be added alongside the dotcom modules. Blacet modules come in kits or assembled, and without hesitation I went for the assembled ones. I don’t quite trust myself behind the soldering iron, I might end…
MOOG MINIMOOG VOYAGER ELECTRIC BLUE [2006 – ]
A Moog. Pronounced “Mogue”. This is a heavy piece of work, and it just oozes quality. It sounds exactly the way you would think a Moog should sound. Solid as a rock and absolutely no complaints about its sonic properties. There’s one…
DOEPFER MCV24 [2005 – 2022]
Instead of having one Kenton Pro Solo per analog synth, I thought it would be wise to have only one MIDI-to-CV -converter to Rule Them All. So I got this, and it’s perfect for that: you can have up to 4 synths connected to it (or 12, if you’re…
DOEPFER A-100 MODULAR SYNTHESIZER [2005]
OK, then. Time to go seriously analog. My plan was very simple: to build a modular synthesizer one module at a time, and spend serious quality time with each new module in order to truly learn it. I ordered an empty 6U case, and oscillator…
WALDORF MICROWAVE I [2005]
I bought this by mistake. I got it dirt cheap from eBay; I just placed a very low bid and ended up getting it. Never really used it; kept it for a few months, then sold it to help finance a dotcom modular. Er, I sold a bunch of other stuff…
KENTON PRO SOLO [2004 – ]
Before digging deeper into analog (= MIDI-less) synths, I had to make sure that they would play nice with digital stuff like, say, a computer that’s supposed to be sequencing them. Kenton came highly recommended. It’s a MIDI-to-CV -converter,…
ARP ODYSSEY [2004 – ]
Now we’re talking Synth History. I grew up listening to this machine, without even knowing it, as it was used by all those bands that shaped my taste in music. Playing around with this for the first time was an almost religious experience.…
KORG MS-20 [2004 – ]
I saw one for sale in my own home town. I haven’t previously even seen one for sale in my home country, so I thought this would be a great chance to get a real classic analog synth and actually get to test it before buying, instead of…
SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS PRO-ONE [2004 – ]
This kind of sneaked up on me. It somehow “just happened”. I completely fell for it. I just had to have it. So here it is. eBay is dangerous.
In search for pure simplicity, this one isn’t quite there yet, as it has an analog modulation…
STUDIO ELECTRONICS SE-1 [2004 – 2006]
Hardware bundles are so much more fun than software bundles. This one “came with” the BassStation, as in I bought it on eBay from the same guy during the same day. According to the documentation on the Net, it was originally built…
ALESIS M1 MK 2 [2004 – 2015]
My first real active monitors. Served me well for their entire stay. Except both of them broke. First one happened under warranty, which really never happens in real life, and the other one was fixed by my colleague and neighbour.
A really…
NOVATION BASSSTATION [2004 – 2005]
Originally bought only to function as a MIDI-to-CV-converter for the MS-20, with the added convenience of having an in-built monophonic analog synth with sound memories. I really don’t need this for the sounds, but it was cheaper…
ALESIS A6 ANDROMEDA [2004 – 2019]
Just when I thought I was going soft, I got the feeling that going all (or mostly) analog is probably the way I really want to go. At least for a while. I have to admit that there simply just is a totally different aura…
KURZWEIL PC-88 [2003 – ]
Obie was my only keyboard since I sold the Emax. I had planned to trade the K2600R for a 88-key version, but no-one seemed interested. So I got this one second-hand and pretty cheap. It has rather nice controller abilities, and I have configured…
ELEKTRON MACHINEDRUM SPS-1 [2003 – 2005]
I always wanted a drum machine. Took me 10 years to get one. I bought this during a period of newly found interest in pure analog sounding music (new John Foxx & Louis Gordon material, mostly), and boy was it worth the money! Extremely…
ROLAND JD-800 [2003 – 2013]
I traded my Obie for this one, and the sample based layered architecture with the more-complex-than-average envelopes give me a first impression that this one excels as a pad machine for those long evolving Vangel-ish background pads. The factory…
MIDIMAN MIDISPORT 8×8 [2003- 2013]
Nothing much to say here. My trusty MIDI interface until it broke down. Usually worked like a charm, but occasionally it would lock up. But nothing a reboot wouldn’t fix.
ACCESS VIRUS C [2002 – 2005]
The original virtual analog Virus became my wet dream having used the Modular for a few years and wanting analog sounds and multitimbrality in the same box. This is a seriously capable machine, and the guys at Access keep making it better all…
BEHRINGER RX 1602 [2003 – ]
I needed a small mixer to combine synths and computer outputs for normal non-music making use, and this one fit the bill perfectly. Quite noisy, but that doesn’t really matter, as I don’t record through it.
KURZWEIL K2600R [2001 – ]
This one replaced my Akai S2000 as a “sample-based instrument”. It is not strictly speaking a sampler, as I don’t have the sampling option installed, but it imports wav files, which makes all the difference. The V.A.S.T. synthesis is extremely flexible,…
WALDORF PULSE [2002 – ]
My first real analog (DCO as opposed to VCO) I ever did anything with (the Korg really doesn’t count). Monophonic. Very simple Waldorfian interface, which all things considered is rather ok. As most people, I would prefer a knob for each…
YAMAHA DTXPRESS [2002 – 2004]
Of course, selling the Octapad gave rise to a need for something else to kick the hit out of. In early 2002, I scraped together a bunch of old stuff I I didn’t need (CD’s, DVD’s, a PC, and the Akai S2000), sold them, and got the money…
OBERHEIM OB-12 [2002 – 2003]
I have mixed feelings about this one. The user interface is the best so far; the beforementioned one knob for each parameter pretty much sums it up. Truly inspiring. But there was something about the sound which just didn’t do it for me.…
ZIP DRIVE [2000 – 2002]
When the EZ-drive broke down I didn’t really feel like buying more of the same. when something breaks down on you, you tend to get a bit careful. But I needed a SCSI-Drive for my samples, and Zip-drives seemed to be all the rage. So I got…
ROLAND OCTAPAD II [1999 – 2000]
My hands and feet are constantly drumming. My ex-next-desk neighbour at the office constantly used to tell my leg to shut up, as his monitor kept jumping up and down. The logical thing for me to do was to get something that, when drummed, actually…
LEXICON MPX-100 [1999 – 2022]
The first external effect I ever bought. Also turned out to be the last external effect I ever bought, as effects turned out to work pretty well inside the box. Really great sound, this one has. At one time I used its S/PDIF connection as a…
YAMAHA MX 12/4 [1999 – 2015]
My first trusty mixer. Worked like a charm and served me well for many years. For all practical purposes it became obsolete when I got my first FireFace, but I only sold it after Judgment Day.
SPIRIT ABSOLUTE 2 [1998 – 2004]
My first real monitors. A huge difference compared to my earlier plastic boxes. Managed several years with them, but ended up upgrading them to active monitors. As one does.
Sounds like a Swedish product. The name, not the sound.
CLAVIA NORD MODULAR [1998 – ]
This is one of my all time favorites. The modular concept is extremely pedagogic, you simply can’t avoid learning how synthesis works while you patch, or even while you study what others have patched. The user community makes sure that you…
KORG WAVESTATION SR [1998 – 2000]
I eventually sold this one, but I remember it had a few very nice sounds, and I particularly liked the reverb, which sounded very warm and “distantly present”. My main problem with this was simply that it was a pain to program, due to the…
AKAI S-2000 [1997 – 2002]
This was the first machine that really felt like a synth, with LFO’s, filters and the works. A very straightforward machine and very easy to use, but it didn’ t sound quite as warm as the Emax, but that didn’t really bother me. The Akai…
E-mu EMAX II [1997 – 2002]
My first sampler. A definite nostalgia factor associated with this one, as Depeche Mode toured with Emaxes for several tours. So I just had to have one. The moment I got it, I realized that its 2 MB memory simply wasn’t enough, so the same…
WINMAN MIDI 4×4 INTERFACE [1997 – 2003]
For the JX-1 I a friend built me a MIDI interface from scratch. Piece of cake, he said. I thought that was pretty hardcore.
This was my first commercial MIDI interface. Plugged into the ISA slot of the PC. Plenty of MIDI channels for my…
SYQUEST EZ-135 DRIVE [1996 – 2000]
Me and a bunch of guys I was working with all got one of these, because they were so cool. Having removable cartridges with insane amounts of rewritable storage capacity was so much better than burning CD’s. I used mine to hold samples for…
ROLAND SC-88 [1995 – 2013]
A 32-part multitimbral General MIDI rompler. Editable resonance and filter cutoff + ADSR envelope. Chorus, reverb and a delay I never managed to get to another tempo than 90 bpm. Nothing spectacular, but does what it’s supposed to do. This…
ROLAND JX-1 [1993 – 2000]
A sample-based mono-timbral polyphonic rompler labeled as “Performance synthesizer”. Quite basic sound editability: 2 ADSR envelopes, one for the volume and the other to modulate the lopass filter. Reverb. 2 sound banks with 32 factory…
KORG SOMETHINGOROTHER [1993]
Analog one-oscillator monosynth, looking very similar to the Korg MicroPreset pictured here. I never really did anything with this one, but on the other hand making music was far from my mind when I got this one. I just bought it because I…
